From August 11 to October 29, 2010 the Chicago Park District and Parkways Foundation present a series of events celebrating the life and work of Jens Jensen. All events are free, open to the public, and held at the Humboldt Park Boathouse, 1359 N. Sacramento, Chicago, unless otherwise noted.
August 11- October 29: A Year in Humboldt Park, Naturalist Photo Essay by Dina Petrakis, curated by Candice Martens with collaboration by Gerald Ritchie, at the historic Humboldt Park Boathouse, 1359 N. Sacramento, Chicago, Illinois- Fridays 6-8pm and Saturdays 1-4 pm. Opening night will be August 11th, in conjunction with SummerDance in Humboldt Park. Repeating images of iconic Park views and individual photographs reflect the richness and diversity of a life cycle in the Park.
August 28 and September 25 (same tour offered twice): Jens Jensen Tour of Chicago's Parks. Between the 1880s and 1920, Chicago’s parks served as living laboratories for Jensen’s ideas and evolving style. Chicago Park historian, Julia S. Bachrach, guides this tour which will reveal many restored examples of Jensen’s work including the Humboldt Park prairie river, Douglas Park’s formal garden, and his masterpiece, Columbus Park. The cost is $30 and the day-long bus tour includes lunch in a beautiful park setting. Please arrive 20 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time for check in. September 4: Janine Fron will lead rounds of playing "Prairie Prose" with visitors at 1 pm. The locally made green game was inspired by Jens Jensen and Prairie School History in which players create poems from nature. At 3 pm, Sam Burckhardt will present his report, Birds of Humboldt Park, followed by a tour thru the Park for bird habitat viewing.
September 15: Jens Jensen lived from September 13, 1860 to October 1, 1951. Celebrate what would have been his 150th birthday with cake and readings from Siftings by Charles Richards, 6pm. Meet some of Jens Jensen's decendants at this event.
September 23: Screening of "Jens Jensen Harmonious World" at the Garfield Park Conservatory, 300 N. Central Park Ave, 7pm. For more information, go to www.jensjensenharmoniousworld.org.
September 29: Edward Torrez, AIA of Bauer Latoza Studios, presents "The Boathouse: Then and Now", and Julia Bachrach, Historian of Chicago Park District, presents"Humboldt Park: Jens Jensen's Living Laboratory," 6pm.
October 1: Chicago Artist's Month Opening, 5-8pm.
October 2: Naturalist and Landscape Design walking tour by Julie Siegel, 10am.
October 8: Reading of her original poetry about Humboldt Park, by Erika Mikkalo, 7pm.
October 16: Curator's Discussion with Candice Martens, 1pm.
